"From Here to There and Back Again!", the story of newly emancipated slaves from a plantation in New Madrid, MO, traveled by rail to resettle in Tama, IA. Presented by Roxanna Anderson of William Penn Univ.
Dr. Anderson will share the story of her ancestors, newly emancipated slaves from a plantation in New Madrid, MO, who traveled by railroad to resettle in Tama, IA. As Dr. Anderson explained, "In 1862 there were two families, the Wallers and the Greens who lived in Tama. Later, a Green would marry a Waller, and the two families would be merged. They had friends from a number of towns in the region : Monroe, Oskaloosa, Marshalltown. One of the Greens would marry a Brown, and a Brown would marry a Anderson. Then Roxanna Anderson would be born." A Colonel from the Army was responsible for bringing them to Tama. The historical information has been gleaned from obituaries which have told most of the story. The remaining information is from a novel about John Waller, an ambassador to the Malagasy Republic appointed by President Benjamin Harrison. The author of that text also ran into difficulty unearthing various stories about their liberation which occurred prior to the Emancipation Proclamation by President Abraham Lincoln on January 1, 1863. Dr. Anderson's family has deep roots in Marshalltown -- Isaac Brown, her great-grandfather is buried in Marshalltown and Roxanna is still searching to find where his wife is buried. Her grandfather, Carl T. Brown, migrated to Chicago and then to Detroit where he lived, married, and died. Her mother was born in Chicago, but because of a business failure the family moved back to Marshalltown where her mother was raised.

Miller serving as the original commander of the Regiment; but the 28th Regiment had an active role in many locations around the country, including Missouri, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Texas, Vicksburg, and New Orleans.
In July 1864, the 'Regiment boarded a ship at New Orleans, went to Chesapeake Bay, joined the Army of the Potomac, and end up in the Shenandoah Valley with Phil Sheridan. Cameron is working with a collection of 24 portrait photographs of 28th Regiment volunteers. So far, over a dozen are named.

Sept 21, 1997.
The Central Iowa Genealogical Society met Sunday, September 21, 1997, at 2:30 p.m. at the Marshalltown Public Library.
Joan Smith-Legg, Marshall County Recorder, presented the program on Vital Statistics and the Marshall County Recorder's Office.
Ms. Smith-Legg has been involved with records preservation since 1979. On July 1, 1997, the county Recorder's Office assumed responsibility for vital records including birth, death, and marriage records.
This move was determined by the legislature to free the clerks of court for court related work only. The recorder's office had assumed passport responsibility almost two years ago.
Some of the regulations accompanying the records move to the recorder's office are not new, but had not previously been enforced, especially those regarding access to birth records.
The marriage records for the county date from the 1850s while birth and death record keeping began in the 1880s.
Older records may have been kept by churches or families and have in the past been used as a proxy for the official records.
In the future, church records will not be allowed for official use because certain "churches" in other states will provide any "record" upon request. Since assuming the vital record duties, the Recorder's Office has issued 80 birth certificates, 224 death certificates, 50 marriage licenses, and 70 marriage applications.
The charge of $10 is split with the state; $4 remains at the county.
Most of the county records are not yet on computer; a target anticipates computerization by July 1998. An application for request is needed to obtain a copy of a county vital record.
The cost is $10 if a certified copy is requested.
Entitlement must be proven and is available to anyone who is the mother, father, child, sibling, relative through grandparent. An uncertified copy is $5 and will be stamped "not for legal purposes" or "for genealogical purposes" and is available to anyone.
The next meeting will be held at the Marshalltown Public Library on September 21 at 2:30 p.m.
- May 18, 1997.
Mike Vogt, director of the Marshall County Historical Museum, will present a slide program on the early settlement of Marshall County.

CIGS currently holds Volumes One through Four of the "Mayflower Descendants Through the Fifth Generation." It was proposed that the society purchase additional volumes in this series. It was also agreed that a volume on Ohio history and genealogy be procured.
The program on Irish Genealogical Research was presented by Theresa Liewer, member of the Iowa Genealogical Society Irish Interest Group. The presentation described methods of conducting research in the country of Ireland and the problems inherent in such research.
Civil registration of births, deaths, and marriages began nationwide in Ireland in 1864, however, it is necessary to know the ancestor's home county to be able to access the information.
Registration information from some counties is difficult or impossible to find as records were destroyed during the Irish civil war early this century. The counties have often set up bureaus to aid in genealogical research as a means of preserving their heritage while creating jobs to retain an educated young Irish population.
- February 16, 1997.
Central Iowa Genealogical Society met Sunday, Feb. 16, at the Marshalltown Public Library with JoAnn Naumann, president, presiding.
Beverly Cross of Baxter and Kathleen Paul, Laurel, reported on the Progress of the cemetery records of Marshall County.
April 6 will be a field trip to the Iowa Genealogical Society Library in Des Moines and those interested are asked to sign up.
Judy Nanke, vice president, introduced Amy Doyle, director of Tama County Historical Society.
Doyle described some of the genealogical holdings in the Tama County Museum such as census for entire State from 1840 through 1925, both Federal and State, plus miscellaneous census for other states.
She mentioned Czech Passenger Lists in seven volumes, "Germans to America, 1850-1887," also passenger lists on microfilm. The museum has a newspaper collection and the Tracer Society has indexed obituaries from 1874 to 1993 and they are in books. The museum is located at 200 North Broadway, Toledo, Iowa and is open Tuesday through Saturday from 7 to 4 p.m.

Volunteers are manually checking several old ledgers and creating a permanent record of the residents cared for and buried at MCCF.
The program topic was "Land, Vital, and Military Records" presented in video form by Carolyn and Gordon Casper.
The speakers described the history of land records in the United States, where to find them, and how to use them to locate an ancestor. Vital records such as birth, death, and marriage records, were displayed and described and procurement methods from the states were given.
