December 2007 -- Christmas Break .
Nov. 18 . Don Paustian wll speak about WW2 research on his father's ship -- the USS Honolulu (CL-48). Damaged at Pearl Harbor, she went on to earn 8 battle stars with actions from Australia, Alaska, Guadalcanal, Solomons, Guam, Palau and Leyte.
CIGS officers reelected to a second term.
Oct. 21 . Theresa Liewer, President of IGS, will discuss the basics of hunting for Irish ancestors. Includes where you need to search in American records to find your ancestor's Irish place of birth, what Irish records are available once you have a place to search, and where can you find the Irish records -- in America, in Ireland, and online. Liewer has been researching her Irish family for over 20 years and has made multiple research trips to Irland.

Sept 16 . "From Here to There and Back Again!", the story of newly emancipated slaves from a plantation in New Madrid, MO, traveled by rail to resettle in Tama, IA. Presented by Roxanna Anderson of William Penn Univ.
Dr. Anderson will share the story of her ancestors, newly emancipated slaves from a plantation in New Madrid, MO, who traveled by railroad to resettle in Tama, IA. As Dr. Anderson explained, "In 1862 there were two families, the Wallers and the Greens who lived in Tama. Later, a Green would marry a Waller, and the two families would be merged. They had friends from a number of towns in the region : Monroe, Oskaloosa, Marshalltown. One of the Greens would marry a Brown, and a Brown would marry a Anderson. Then Roxanna Anderson would be born." A Colonel from the Army was responsible for bringing them to Tama. The historical information has been gleaned from obituaries which have told most of the story. The remaining information is from a novel about John Waller, an ambassador to the Malagasy Republic appointed by President Benjamin Harrison. The author of that text also ran into difficulty unearthing various stories about their liberation which occurred prior to the Emancipation Proclamation by President Abraham Lincoln on January 1, 1863. Dr. Anderson's family has deep roots in Marshalltown -- Isaac Brown, her great-grandfather is buried in Marshalltown and Roxanna is still searching to find where his wife is buried. Her grandfather, Carl T. Brown, migrated to Chicago and then to Detroit where he lived, married, and died. Her mother was born in Chicago, but because of a business failure the family moved back to Marshalltown where her mother was raised.

April 15 . All day Open House for CIGS at Iowa Genealogical Society library at 628 East Grand Avenue in Des Moines -- 9 am to 4 pm. map
March 18 . Meeting will be at the Historical Society Museum to view the CIGS library. Come early or stay late to review the facility.
Program by Stephen Frese : the National History Day winner has won a full scholarship to Case-Western Reserve because of his paper "From Emancipation to Equality".
